Why Process Safety Is Often Overlooked — And Why It Matters

In many organisations, health and safety focuses on day-to-day risks such as slips, trips and manual handling. While these are important, process safety risks are often less understood and can have far more serious consequences.

Process safety relates to hazards involving fire, explosion and dangerous substances, where a single failure can result in significant harm to people, assets and business continuity.

A common issue is that these risks are not always visible in routine operations. As a result, they are often underestimated or not assessed in sufficient detail.

For example, workplaces using flammable liquids or generating combustible dust may not fully consider:

  • The potential for ignition

  • The formation of explosive atmospheres

  • The suitability of equipment used in those areas

This is where DSEAR assessments and hazardous area classification become critical. They help organisations understand where risks exist and what controls are required.

Ignoring process safety does not mean the risk is low — it simply means it is not being properly managed.

A balanced approach is needed, where both general health and safety and higher-risk hazards are considered together, ensuring that risks are identified, understood and controlled.
